BICS and CALP

· Describe your own learning experience using what you know now about BICS and CALP.

When I first started learning English at seven years old I enjoyed being able to express myself in three different languages (Spanish, Catalan and English). Although I was already using English, it has not been CALP until I started doing it at my home University where I have had specific lessons to develop a more sophisticated level of knowledge.

About one year ago I decided to move to London in order to apply and develop my conversational skills in a social setting, and this would be BICS.

I am now able to enjoy a new experience in a totally English environment where I can deal with daily exchanges with increasing confidence in BICS and CALP.

  1. Fran,
Thank you for sharing your experiences with development of academic and social language. I had not realized that you had lived and studied in England for a year. How are you feeling now about you BICS and CALP in English?

    Best wishes,
    Gina

  2. During the time I spent living in London I could develop my BICS but not my CALP. I decided to move there for a while as I wanted to improve my speaking and listening in English.
I did not study there so I could only improve my academic language through the books I read in those seven months I spent living and working there.
I could improve my BICS thanks to the great social input I had working in Zara and talking with the costumers or my mates. Although I had the opportunity to speak Spanish most of the time (as most of the stuff in Zara are Spanish), I tried to speak English as much as I could with my English speaking friends either at work or outside.
